I can't resist when it comes to word games. Crosswords, Scrabble, Hangman J, Boggleword, any kind of word game catches my attention, and so did Iconolexis.

Pick the picture
I loaded up the game and I was all set to play around with a collection of letters (or words) and be smartly on my way. But it's not that easy. Iconolexis takes a bit of thought, there's no way you can zip through it a level a minute but you will improve with practice.

However, it's simpler to play than to explain, but here goes. The game is played on a 5 x 11 grid. The idea is to make your way from one side of the board to the other linking up and matching objects pictured at the top of the screen with letters and symbols on the board. The starting and ending points are marked with letters. In between there might be more squares with letters or, maybe other 'symbols' such as a teleport, or a blocker, etc.

The rules are simple. To place a picture tile after a letter, the object pictured on the tile must be begin with that particular letter. For instance after a 'T' the tile with a picture of a Tiger would be one correct choice. Of course the tile following on from this one will have to picture an animal starting with 'R' and so on. On the other hand, if you want to place a tile before a 'T' then it must picture something with a word that ends in 'T'.

Place the tile
Placing tiles above and below a fixed tile is easier. You can match any letter, but it gets tricky if you get stymied and your line of tiles zigzags around and ends up with more than one neighbour. Then you must satisfy the rules that pertain to all abutting tiles.

That's the basics and it's fun for word tinkerers and all the family can join in. Kids and adults alike can improve their vocabulary and strategic thinking while having fun. You are timed all the while for each level so you can try to beat your score, or someone else's. You can save your game and record your scores and upload them to the website for bragging rights and maybe even a prize.

Practice makes perfect with this game. You need to fiddle a bit early on to get the hang of it and there are several object sets in addition to animals and new ones are being created all the time. Iconolexis is something different and can be quite addictive so why not download the demo from the website and give it a go? The game can be played in English or French.
